Dirty Hair Secrets

As a hairstylist, I am always asked by clients about how often they can have great looking hair without washing it every day. There are some great advantages to “dirty” hair. Not only does it save you time from having to shampoo it all the time, but it will actually hold a style with a lot more ease! Clean hair is slippery and soft, and can cause curls to fall flat and updos to slip. The natural oils also give your hair amazing shine and added fullness. Most women wash their hair far more often than necessary. Your scalp produces natural oils that are made to coat and protect your hair, and every time you wash your hair, you are stripping those amazing and moisturizing oils out. I usually wash mine once or twice a week. When I tell clients that, they usually don’t understand how I can go that long without washing it!

Dirty hair secrets

This hair may look clean, but this was day 4 of not washing it!

So for those of you girls who want to rock your hairstyle for a few more days, here are three of my favorite “dirty” tricks:

1. Dry Shampoo

If you haven’t used dry shampoo before, you should drop whatever it is you are doing right now, and head straight to the store to buy some! Dry shampoo is one of the best tools for getting rid of oily roots. There are many different types and brands on the market right now. From aerosol to powders, from salon brands to drugstore, there is a product for everyone! To use dry shampoo, you simply spray it on the roots of your hair, wait a minute or two, and then brush or rub the product into your hair. It’s a fool proof product that not only absorbs oil, but gives your hair some lift and volume! Tip: A lot of dry shampoos come out white, so if you have dark hair, take extra caution to rub the product into your hair. You can also add a bit of a shine spray afterwards to avoid your hair from looking too matte and powdery.

2. Tease It

Teasing your hair at the roots is a great way to hide the fact that it’s a bit dirty. When your hair is teased, you are slightly disguising the oil, because the hair is not lying as flat on your head. You can use a teasing comb, a bristle brush, or a rattail comb. That part is up to you. Teasing is a great trick to do in addition to using dry shampoo, and works well with a bit of hairspray, too! What’s the best part about teasing dirty hair? You will get way more volume and hold than when your hair is freshly washed!

3. Bangs Only

The number one complaint I hear about oily hair, is that bangs tend to look greasy and oily before everything else does. This is usually because the oils from your skin get onto your bangs, and people tend to touch their bangs all the time. Instead of washing all of your hair, just wash your bangs! Pin the rest of your hair out of the way, and shampoo your bangs in the sink. Dry and restyle them, and your hair will look and feel refreshed without the hassle of washing your whole head of hair.

I hope you girls embrace your dirty hair! Don’t worry, you can keep how long it’s been since you’ve shampooed it a secret. I’ll never tell ;) .
