The Top 5 Hair Products Every Girl Should Own

I think we can all agree that when it comes to choosing hair products, the amount of choices we have can be overwhelming! There are so many different brands and products on the market. Since we don’t always know what’s best for our hair, sometimes it seems easier to just buy them all. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a general idea of what products you need so that you can avoid feeling like you’ve purchased the entire store?

Have no fear! Here is an easy list of the top products that every girl should have in their bathroom cabinet. These products will work on just about anyone’s hair. While you may need a few extra items in your hair arsenal, these are great go-to products that will never let you down!

1. Heat protectant/Leave-in
This is one of the most important products for everyone’s hair! If you’re a girl who doesn’t normally like products of any kind, you should at least be using a heat protectant when you get out of the shower. Women use an incredible amount of heat on their hair. From blow dryers, to straighteners, to curling irons, we do it all! Hair can take a beating from all of this heat styling, so adding a heat protectant into your regimen will protect the hair cuticles from getting as damaged. The easiest and most lightweight version would be a spray on heat protectant. It won’t add lot of build up to your hair, which is great if you know that you’ll be adding some other products as well.

2. Volumizing/Thickening Product
A volumizing product is good for everyone’s hair—yes, even for those of you with more hair than you know what to do with! A product that adds volume or thickness to your hair not only will add some lift to areas that are flat, but it will add a small amount of hold as well. The key is to get the right type texture of product for your hair. If your hair is on the thinner side, go with a spray or foam. These will give your hair a bit of lift, without weighing it down. If your hair is thick, you can get away with just about anything. Just choose a product that you love, whether it’s a spray, cream, or mouse.

3. Smoothing Cream
This is a product that scares a lot of women! The word cream usually makes women think their hair will be weighed down and greasy looking if they use it. If you’re using one that is too heavy for your hair type, or using too much of your product, then yes, this can be the case. But if you choose a smoothing cream that’s right for your hair type, it can work wonders! A smoothing cream is perfect for those days when you want sleek and frizz free hair. Adding just a small amount will help keep those pesky flyaways in place, and it will cut down on the amount of work you have to do with your blow dryer/straightener to get your hair nice and smooth.

4. Hairspray
Hairspray is a magical thing. It holds curls in place, gets rid of flyaways, gives texture for backcombing, and keeps frizz at bay. This is definitely the type of product that requires trying a few different holds and types before you find one you love. I usually recommend a medium hold, so that you can layer it for a stronger hold if you need it! Keeping hairspray in your purse can be a life saver for those bad hair days where you need to throw it up into a ponytail, or if you have a pesky cowlick that needs to be tamed. (Side note: spray hairspray on your tights/leggings to keep your dress or skirt from sticking to them. Like I said, it’s magical!)

5. Pomade or Wax
This is my all-time favorite product to use when I am finished styling my hair. By adding just a small amount on the ends of your hair, it creates a polished and complete look. It also can be used (sparingly) on your roots to calm down frizz. Most pomades add a bit of shine as well, and let’s face it, who doesn’t love shiny hair?! It’s a perfect way to piece out your layers, or to break up curls after using a curling iron. It adds separation, a bit of hold, and the perfect amount of texture.

So now when you enter a store, you’ll know exactly what to be looking for! That is not to say you cannot add a few more products to your collection, but as long as you have these five, you’ll be able to avoid any bad hair day situation—and will be able to enjoy awesome and gorgeous hair all day long!
