To Color or Not to Color? The Three Questions You Should Always Ask Your Hairstylist

Haircolor questions to ask your stylistLet’s face it: when it comes to getting our hair colored, we sometimes have a LOT of questions. Should I go darker or lighter? Should I get ombre or balayage? Do I want a subtle or dramatic change?

Luckily, most of us girls have a very special person in our lives who can answer these questions—your hairstylist! It’s true: not only do they have to ability to do amazing color, but they also hold a ton of knowledge that can help you make a decision on what you want to do with your hair color.

A lot of women are nervous to ask their hairstylist important questions, thinking that it’s somehow telling them how to do their job. Well guess what? You’re the client, so you need to make sure you are able to know exactly what will be happening to that beautiful hair of yours! There’s nothing worse than going into a color appointment where you and your stylist are on completely different pages. This can result in you being unhappy with your hair or paying a lot more money than you’d like.

So to save you a bit of hair trauma (and as a stylist myself), I came up with three vital questions that you should always ask before getting a new color service done:

1. What does the maintenance look like?

Certain types of color services will require more upkeep than others. This is really important to discuss before getting a service done. If you’re not one who wants to go in every 6 weeks or so to get your color touched up, make sure your stylist knows this! Otherwise you can end up being disappointed in the longevity of your color. If you’re not up for visiting the salon too often, your stylist can help you figure out what color will last and grow out gracefully.

2. What is the right shade for me?

Any good hairstylist should be able to tell you what colors will look amazing on you. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out exactly what shades will look the best on us. Should you go for a red-violet, cinnamon, or copper? If you ask your stylist to be honest with you about what will look good and what won’t—it will help you decide on a color that will make your skin glow and your eyes pop.

3. How much does the service cost?

No matter where you get your hair done, color services are not exactly cheap. But depending on your budget, you can find something that you can easily afford. How do you do this? Again, ask your stylist! If you really need to know what you’ll be spending on your hair, simply ask your stylist to tell you what each part of the color service will cost. Don’t think this makes your stylist annoyed—in reality, they want to be on the same page just as much as you do! This will prevent that dreaded “sticker shock” you get when your hair ends up costing you way more than you first expected.

So the next time you’re feeling a bit nervous about getting your hair colored, just remember to ask these questions. Your hairstylist will appreciate your involvement, and you’ll appreciate getting the color you always wanted!
