Our New Year’s Resolution

Dear Beloved, Beautiful, Amazing Sister in Christ,

I began writing an article about five times, but I couldn’t seem to get the words to come out. So I want to start by directly addressing YOU, and by letting you know what my desire—and hopefully, God’s desire—is for your life.

My desire is for you to understand the TRUTH about who you are, who God is, and the freedom that is possible in Him. It’s safe to say that most of you probably don’t fully realize how much God loves you and how much you are capable of. You’ve been told that you don’t measure up—that you aren’t beautiful enough, smart enough, creative enough, popular enough—and the list goes on. But what makes me SICK is that we as women believe that WE CAN’T BE FREE from our insecurities, from our anxiety, from our depression, from our loneliness, from our sexual struggles. A lie that we often believe, and one that is often reinforced by people in the church, is that the strongholds in our lives that I just mentioned are things that we simply have to live with. We believe that our lives will be spent secretly resisting our fears and sinful urges, until the day that Jesus comes to call us home. This, my sisters, is a wicked lie from the pits of hell. We are called to freedom. We have received the Holy Spirit. If we had faith in Him and were willing to leave our comfort in order to wage war on our strongholds, we could find the freedom that Jesus has promised us.

For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “”Abba,” Father.”
- Romans 8:15 NIV

Matthew 5:8 NIV says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” When we allow our strongholds and impurities to remain, we are basically preventing ourselves from being able to see God more clearly. If we live our lives like this, we run the risk of never fully realizing the power that we have from the Holy Spirit or the intimacy that is possible with God because of the cross.

Do you believe that God could set you free, that you could live a life free from anxiety, free from insecurity, free from secret struggles? If any small part of you desires this, our desire is that you will embark on this journey with us. Warning: It won’t be easy. The devil doesn’t want us to remember the promises of scripture, and he might try and scare you away from the pursuit of truth. People around you might not believe this is possible, and will discourage you from believing that you can be free. It’s a long journey, but take heart, because no matter what comes at you, GOD IS WORTH THE FIGHT.

It’s important to remember that we don’t have the power to find freedom on our own. God and God alone has the power to break strongholds and grant freedom. If we fight this battle without Him, we’ve already lost. It doesn’t happen overnight, or all at once. Freedom comes when we practice and pursue it, resting in God’s grace on a daily basis. We need to learn to walk in His spirit each day, to declare His promises, and to constantly surrender control of our lives and decisions to Him.

Our resolution for 2013 is to give you truth from God about how to call out the lies and replace them with truth. This territory is a little more dangerous, but we’re ready to fight a little harder for what we believe in. Even if you don’t plan on following The You Are Project this year, I hope that reading this has renewed your curiosity about just how much is possible with God. If nothing else, I hope this stirs something inside of you, a bit of hope that perhaps there is more to this walk with God than you initially thought.

And finally, I would like to leave you with a bit of truth.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” - John 8:36 NIV
