Amy Palmer: Is It Possible to Have “Too Many” Interests?

Filed under Career & Money Live Well on Mar 08 13 by

From a pretty princess to a burly fireman, we all have dreams for our lives from a very young age. We role play with friends, and we believe that our life will eventually have one purpose to act out and give ourselves fully to. As we grow, so do our interests and the goals we have for ourselves. Some can pin-point and follow through with one job and be perfectly happy, but some of us have more than one thing that gives us that feeling of fulfillment, of knowing that we have used all the strengths that God has given us.

We have many strengths to choose from, and it is what you do with them that will lead your life. For example, I enjoy writing, and I have a love of clothes and design, as well as a passion for people. Combine those together, and my current title would be, “nursing-student-personal-style-blogger.” It has a ring to it, right? It might not be the conventional title I had for myself at the age of three, but it has come a long way from wanting to be an archaeologist (even though that career would be pretty rad too).

“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 TNIV

There are so many aspects of life that can be interesting to us. Do you like boats? That’s cool. Do you like making a whole pan of brownies and eating half the batter just to make sure they’re good? That’s cool too. We have to realize that it is okay to have interests in many different things. How boring would it be to have a few interests, but only be able to pick one? God gives us these interests to use them for His glory. There are many things that I enjoy, such as do-it-yourself projects, furniture makeovers, and thrifting—sometimes it can seem a bit overwhelming. Do I want these passions to become more of a career? How will I know what will be better for my future?

I am not sure if I will ever know the complete answer, but that is the beautiful thing. There are always opportunities to change our interests, to grow, and to challenge ourselves. In the end, whatever you do, it’s important to do it all to the best of the ability that was given to you. You cannot go wrong with Him behind you.

“You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.”
- Psalm 59:17 TNIV
