When God Ignores Our Prayers

I am not immune from feeling lonely, and I certainly face times when I feel like my prayers are hitting the ceiling. Lately, I’ve really been struggling to stay motivated and passionate in my walk with God. I’m at that point right before the mountaintop—the place where I am the weariest and it’s the easiest to give up. I keep praying and asking God for answers.

“What’s next?” I ask him. “What job should I start looking for? When will I be able to move out on my own? When will The You Are Project receive funding? When will I get a rest from the spiritual attack?”

I wait for a response, and I don’t hear anything. No audible reply, no word from the Spirit, no dream or vision. Is God ignoring me? Is he only listening to me when I receive my answer right away? What is he doing up there when he doesn’t seem to be responding to my questions?

Revelation 5:8 reads, “…the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” Our prayers are incense before the throne of God. What does that mean?

I have this perfume from Victoria’s Secret that I absolutely love. When I wear it, I feel beautiful and the smell reminds me of the comfort of getting ready in my room for a night out. My mom wears Jovan Musk, and that smell will forever remind me of her hugs. Another smell that I love is my lavender candle. I love to light it while taking a relaxing bath after a long day.

Smell is a powerful thing. It brings relaxation. Nostalgia. Comfort. Smell is not about rushing or moving to the next step. Rather, it causes us to  stop and savor the moment. When we pray to God, he doesn’t always give an answer right away. In that silence, he’s not ignoring us, but enjoying us. Rather than giving in to the feeling that your prayer hasn’t made it out of your room, remember that God is in the room, savoring the moment you’ve taken to spend with him. Instead of growing angry, why don’t you, in turn, stop and savor being in the presence of your Creator? He already has the solution. He just wants you to trust him.
