Uncovering Your Purpose: It’s Time to Lose Control of Your Life

Filed under Uncovering Your Purpose on Oct 27 12 by

Deep down, most of us have an inner desire for adventure. We long for a rich and fulfilling life; we long to be a part of something greater than ourselves. In seeking to fill this built-in longing, we pursue careers, take trips, work hard, make new friends, and enter new relationships. In the end, we feel let down because even if we have achieved everything we wanted, we find that none of it has lived up to our expectations. We are still empty.

We don’t always understand the consequences of “finding our life” without God. When we hold onto to the things in our life with tight fists (things that are admittedly unfulfilling), we are preventing some of the REAL blessings from entering—how can we receive His blessings with our hands closed around something else? To find the real blessings, we need to lose control. But what does that look like?

Losing control is a complete surrender of our ambitions, plans, possessions, thoughts, fears, and words to God’s control. We give up the right to plan our lives, and we open up to God’s direction. As God often reminds me, it’s no longer my job to pursue joy. I am trusting that He will give me whatever joy I need along the way.

Losing control is one of the most important move toward finding your purpose, but it is also the most difficult. It will go against a lot of your instincts about the best way to manage your life. You might get criticized for making seemingly illogical choices to follow the calling God has placed on your heart. You’ll find opposition and spiritual warfare that you didn’t even know existed.

It will not be easy, but it will be worth it.

This is the part that’s hard to explain: When you catch a glimpse of how glorious and real God is, you’ll want to drop what you’re doing to find more of Him. A relationship with Him is worth everything. To know the power and beauty of His presence is worth losing your life.
