Uncovering Your Purpose

“You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other.”
Deutoronomy 4:35

God is a mystery far beyond human comprehension. He is merciful, loving, just, and holy. He is all-powerful, present everywhere, and awe-inspiring. He is more than the master of mathematics and science—He invented these systems, and they are subject to Him. He is full of creative power and a passion that burns like fire. He is unsearchable, unknowable, and incomprehensible. To hear the voice of the Lord is to tremble in fear. The prophets that beheld the image of His glory fell to the ground terrified. He is the great I AM, and no one can come close to His majesty.

Here is a profound mystery: God wants to make Himself known to you.

He is unknowable, and yet He desires to be known and loved by His people. He made Himself known to us through the Word of God. What exactly is the Word of God? John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” Throughout the Old Testament, we see God communicating with His people by the Word of the Lord. The Word of the Lord spoke to Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, the prophets…this Word is God’s way of revealing Himself to man. If we read on to John 1:14, we learn even more: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The Word of the Lord is Jesus Christ. Jesus is God in Flesh, come to save man from his sin. If Jesus is no longer on this earth, how can we, like the Old Testament followers before us, have the Word of God? In John 14:16-17, Jesus promises, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
It is later revealed by Paul that this Spirit gives us access to Christ Himself. 1 Corinthians 2 talks about wisdom from the Spirit (If you have time, read the entire passage). Verse 16 reads, “For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

WOW! I don’t know about you, but this amazes me every time that I think about it. When we allow the Holy Spirit to be the reigning influence in our lives, we have access to the mind of Christ. This unsearchable God didn’t just tell us who He is; He gave us the mind of Christ so that we might know Him for ourselves! Take a moment to revel in and praise God for the fact that He gave us such a gift.
